The Barsburg Empire is the main setting for the 07 ghost series. It is the largest and most powerful empire in the 07-Ghost series, consisting of several other countries that have been invaded and conquered over the years, including the kingdoms of Raggs (ラグス王国) and Antwort (アントヴォルト). Archbishop Bastien had said the goal of the Barsburg Empire is world domination, something proven true by their conquests in Raggs and Antwort.
Barsburg appears to have been inspired by Germany, as it shares many German customs and terminology (Bars, Burg, Hoch, Begleiter, Antwort, Wahrheit, Vertrag, Verloren, etc. are German words).
The Empire is split up into 7 Districts, each of the Districts having its own cities, rulers and cultures. The Barsburg capital is located in District 1 and the Barsburg Church is located in District 7.
Etymology[]
'Bars' is a German word that has the same meaning in English. 'Burg' means 'castle'.
The pilot chapter, Seven Ghosts (chapter), hints that Barsburg was previously known as the Lulu Empire. In Teutonic, 'Lulu' means 'famous in war'. This is probably a reference to the wars Barsburg has waged on other countries over the years, as well as the fact that their military is powerful and infamous.

History[]
Origins of the Empire[1][]
Approximately 1000 years prior to the start of the series, the Barsburg Kingdom was one of three kingdoms fighting for control over the Eye of Raphael, its opponents being the Oak Kingdom and the Reuen Kingdom. Fighting over the artifact apparently lasted for decades. The Barsburg Church, whose newfound influence had grown rapidly, oversaw a peace accord between the three kingdoms, unifying them into a single Empire which shared control over the Eye.
The Barsburg Family, skilled at playing politics, eventually consolidated a great deal of power within the nation, becoming the Empire’s de facto rulers.
The Emperor was nominally chosen from among the three God Houses that had originally formed the Empire.
Pre-Raggs War[]
Directly preceding the Raggs War, the Barsburg Empire included at least District 1, District 2, and District 3.[1] In order to maintain peace between the Empire and Raggs, both coutries which had divine protection via the Eye of Raphael and Eye of Mikhail, respectively, the two nations had previously formed a long-standing alliance.
Though allied with the Raggs Kingdom, certain members of the Barsburg Military had begun looking to the northern nation with an eye for conquest. Barsburg's land was relatively poor in zaiphon reserves, while Raggs was replete by comparison. As the Empire had begun to develop new technology using zaiphon as an energy source, a new supply would be advantageous to both the military and the economy.[2]
Unknown to Raggs, Emperor Wolfram Eifeler Barsburg of the Barsburg Empire was being manipulated by one of the Seven Ghosts, Landkarte, who sought to stoke tensions between the two countries for his own purposes. Under Landkarte's guidance, the Emperor has Millea Klein, King Weldeschtein Krom Raggs' lover and concubine, poisoned into a coma.
The Raggs War[]

In a plot to bring about the destruction of Raggs Kingdom, the Ghost Landkarte, alongside The Pope of the Barsburg Church, furnished the Barsburg Empire with false information about the theft of Pandora's Box. The Empire was informed that Bishop Fea Kreuz Raggs, brother to King Weldeschtein Krom Raggs, had stolen the artifact and been given sanctuary by the King.
The Raggs War
In truth, Pandora's Box had been stolen by the Pope, who sought to implant it in a human host to unlock the knowledge he believed to be contained inside. He used Teito Klein, then known as Wahrheit Tiashe Raggs, as the vessel for Pandora's Box, having taken the Crown Prince from Queen Vanessa Antwort of Raggs and staging his death. Fea Kreuz discovered the deception and was able to escape with Tiashe, but not before Tiashe had Pandora's Box implanted into him. The Pope was quick to spread a falsified version of events, ensuring blame would be pointed elsewhere.[3]
The Barsburg Empire was swift to react to the false information, launching a campaign to reclaim Pandora's Box. Using the Eye of Raphael as a weapon, the Empire began pushing north, fast overwhelming the Kingdom's defenses. Whole sections of the Raggs continent were bombarded to dust during the attack.[2]
Barsburg soldiers were able to quickly capture and subdue King Weldeschtein, who was summarily executed.
The Barsburg Empire were able to conquer all of the lands of the former Raggs Kingdom in short order. The continent home to the Krat God House became District 4, the former capital of the Raggs Kingdom District 5, and the Hausen family's domain District 6. Former territories of Raggs suffered from extreme mass casualties and deepening poverty as a result of the war. The Raggs royal family was almost entirely annihilated.
To free up funds for the military's deployment, it is strongly implied that hospitals and hospices paid for by the Barsburg Empire were burned and destroyed.[4]
Due to the conflict, tensions with an ally of the former Raggs Kingdom, the Kingdom of Antwort, increased dramatically. Antwort had allegedly taken Pandora's Box into its safekeeping before the total destruction of Raggs and had begun using it as a threat to deter military action.
At some point between the end of the Raggs War and the start of the series, the home of the Barsburg Church, previously neutral territory, joined the Empire as District 7.
Sky Pirate Subjugation[]

The Sky Pirate Subjugation was the large scale annihilation of the Sky Pirates in Barsburg's bid to control the skies.

The Antwort War[]

It is unknown how or why the war with Antwort began, but at the start of the series, the two countries were shown to be already hostile towards each other. The earliest mention of the conflict with Antwort was during one of the Military meetings, where the officers spoke of how Antwort was amassing its army. The Black Hawks were eventually sent to resolve the conflict. The hostiles were subjugated, and the Empire took Antwort within a week, making it part of the Empire.
Restoration of Raggs[]
In Kapitel 99, it is mentioned that Wahrheit Teito Klein reestablished the Raggs kingdom, which could mean one or more districts are no longer part of the Empire.
Government[]
It is a monarchy. According to the emperor of Barsburg, it can only be ruled by an empress(which he found farcical).[5]
Geography[]
The Barsburg Empire is made up of several floating continents, allegedly kept afloat by Zaiphon, and joined together with thin bridges of land. It is currently unknown what lies below the line of clouds as no one has ever ventured below them. The main land of the Barsburg Empire is divided into 7 areas each known as a District, and the Districts are numbered 1-7, presumably in the order they were conquered. The original names of the Districts are unknown.
